In 1947, Marion Davies sold the mansion to a hotelier, who transformed it into a boutique resort, with the Sand and Sea Club. The business venture was not successful, and the mansion was bulldozed. All that was left was the beautiful 7,000 square foot guest house, and the original swimming pool. After that venture failed, the mansion was demolished and the property sold to the State of California in 1959. For the next 30 years, the site was a popular private beach facility called the Sand & Sea Club, a place Wallis Annenberg remembers visiting in her youth.
The five-acre oceanfront estate sits next to Santa Monica State Beach and offers guests a historic swimming pool, a splash pad and play area for kids, an art gallery, and a boardwalk leading down to the water. The 5-acre oceanfront site upon which the Annenberg Community Beach House now sits was originally developed during the Gold Coast era of the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies. The Davies estate featured a mansion of 100-plus rooms and an ornate marble swimming pool. As with many Hearst projects, the vision of architect Julia Morgan provided a cohesive grace to the rambling estate. At the direction of Wallis Annenberg, the Annenberg Foundation provided major funding for the restoration and repurposing of a five-acre beachfront property at 415 Pacific Coast Highway, in Santa Monica, California. Beach activities are supported by a small building that supplies umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards and other beach paraphernalia.

The Annenberg Beach House is on the Santa Monica waterfront, just 1.5 miles north of the pier. Swim in a historic pool, enjoy a beachfront meal, and take your kids to the splashpad and play area. Some years back, when the concept of developing a public beach house at the site evoked controversy, the Santa Monica Conservancy initiated a community support group known as Friends of 415 PCH. Led by Board member Joel Brand, the Friends rallied hundreds to the cause of preserving the historic site and renovating it for the public’s use.
Davies sold the estate to a developer in 1947 and it was converted into luxury hotel Oceanhouse and the Sand & Sea Club, a limited membership beach club. A few years later, the Oceanhouse venture ended and the main mansion was torn down. Soon after, the State of California purchased the property, continuing to operate the Sand & Sea Club until the 1994 Northridge Earthquake severely damaged the structures. Once a hot spot for Old Hollywood, the Annenberg Community Beach House is now a favorite destination for many SoCal locals.
